The LaCie 5Big – This HAL has BIG storage

Doesn’t this thing look like the HAL9000? Pretty creepy resemblance. And on purpose, according to designer Neil Poulton. The designer said he created the front panel with inspiration from the supercomputer at the heart of the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey film. However, aside from that all seeing eye thing on the front, this beast is all about big time, compact affordable storage. No fear of self-awareness here.

At the LaCie web site, we learn the 5big has five hot-swappable Serial ATA drive bays that can hold up to 7.5 terabytes of information when fully loaded up. That’s some major storage.

The 5big is flexible too; it works with Windows, Mac and Linux at three different prices and models. The 2.5TB version is $899; 5.0TB capacity retails at $1399; and the 7.5TB monster will set you back $1899.
