Intel releases X-25E Solid State Drive
Intel is fairly dominant in the CPU world, but they are now into the flash memory industry with a splash with their latest offering, the Intel X-25E Extreme SATA Solid-State Drive. This is a high-end solid state drive which will target server and workstation systems.
Since solid state drives do not have moving parts, the lifespan is greatly increased over traditional HD components. The 50nm single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory technology used is top of the line, and much more secure than mechanical systems, and will not have the bottlenecks associated with conventional drives. SSDs alos lower cooling and energy costs greatly.
Intel will be selling the 32GB capacity drive for $695 (not cheap, if you didn’t know), with the 64GB version to be released in early 2009.
