It’s difficult to learn to putt effectively, even with books, mags and DVDs helping you. Nothing substitutes for the real thing. Well, feel free to practice to your hearts content with the Electronic Putting Trainer, a device that brings golf into the digital age by helping the owner work on their putting very precisely. Read on:

This is the putting trainer that helps you improve your ball striking, club path, and putt alignment. The system’s infrared sensors detect both the speed and direction of each putt, providing precise, instant feedback by showing exactly where the midpoint of the ball has struck the bar in relation to its “virtual hole.” A series of putts are displayed on the bar as separate illuminated tick marks. The flexible bar automatically bounces the ball back to you. The sensitive trigger bar can be set to any green speed and distances between four and 32?. The trainer challenges you with six games; you can play a game of “500? which requires you to place a series of five puts as close as possible to the hole. Putts are graded on a scale of 0-100. Can be played on any surface. Includes two C batteries.

Now, golf isn’t a cheap hobby, and never has been. This gadget goes for $329.95, so if you have the stamina and the pocketbook, this pretty much is a great pickup for any golf lover.

The new Abgymnic Muscle Toner claims to “sculpt, tone and firm from the comfort of your home” for only £4.95. It uses electronic muscle stimulation that mimics regular exercises as you sit. Yes, in the past these haven’t always worked, but this one sounds like it might work (at least a little bit). From the creators:

Safe, gentle pulses transmitted from the toning belt onto your skin cause muscular contractions that mimic those of normal exercises like stomach crunches and riding an exercise bike for example, so you can sculpt, firm and tone – without lifting a finger! For maximum results using the Abgymnic toning belt alongside your normal fitness routine is a great way to increase your muscle definition even more and get extra help for problem areas like underarms, thighs, hips and tummies.

The makers claim within a month of regular usage you’ll start to see at least a little difference in muscles and definition at the sites where its used. Hey, for that price, you can’t lose out too much, we suppose.

Look no further than the A2B Metro, it appears.

These folks have been making light electric vehicles since 2002 (with the motor for this one being their own proprietary design), so they know what they’re doing, and this one looks pretty interesting to us.

The feature list is impressive: It’s virtually silent when operating, and its not for slowpokes; it can accelerate to 20 mph in six seconds, which is pretty zippy for any bike. It’s got oversized seats for comfort, and it can go a long way on a charge; 20 miles with no pedaling at all, and 50 miles with your feet assisting with the pedaling, so it can actually be used to commute decent distances.

And that’s the unique thing about the A2B Metro: you can pedal yourself, with the bike assisting, or you can just ride with the bike supplying all the power. It’s the best of both worlds, and can actually be used as a car replacement. You can find out more about the A2B Metro and where to buy it at Ultra Motor.

Now there are with the Hand Fitness Trainer which is supposed to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and reduce repetitive-motion damage in the hand. Sounds good to us.

Here’s more from the creators:

The device slips on like a glove and has elastic bands that strap to each fingertip, providing resistance as you open your hand. By flexing your hand in the opposite direction of its typical motion, the trainer strengthens the extensor muscles in your hands, wrists, and elbows, helping to reduce the painful symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and tendonitis. Ideal for people whose careers or hobbies require manual dexterity, the device strengthens underused muscles and increases flexibility of overworked muscles in the palm, resulting in improved muscle balance and joint stability. The resistance can be adjusted individually for each finger and a normal exercise routine consists of 1-3 sets of 10-20 repetitions, every other day. One size fits most.

The Hand Fitness Trainer sells for $39.95 each, and if it does what it claims, this is something worth checking out.

But what about a handheld portable alternative to the Wii? That niche may have been filled by the ME2.

There is a built-in pedometer on the device where you earn points by walking, jogging or whatever. The further you go, the more points you get. Your family can compete for the most points, and it can turn into a game of sorts.

Once you have points, connect it via USB to a computer, and your points will be credited to your account, and you can even get new titles to add to the handheld.

Kids may or may not be interested, but introduced properly, it might be a fun way to combine competition and exercise.

The price is right too: with 50% off at eToys, its gone from $34.99 to $17.50.
