CES gem: Pacemaker could start a music revolution

Before you ask, no, this has nothing to do with a heart condition of any sort. It’s actually a digital DJ System that it turns out is very cool indeed.

The demo of this device was quite impressive, according to some that have reported on it. The new improved Pacemaker has a 60GB to 120GB hard drive, which is more than enough for the average audiophile’s music collection (about 20-30 thousand songs). And you’ll need that space as you “mix together” audio from two different tracks to form brand new beats and sounds. It’s been reported to be very addictive.

The controls look tough to learn at first, but as you adapt to them you can put effects in your mixed tracks using a touch-sensitive circular controller and track switching buttons that become second nature as you use them. The Pacemaker is somehow able to put two terrific tracks in sync so they mix to create something entirely awesome.

Mixing and sampling different tracks has been popular for a long time in Rap and R&B circles, and I do believe that (potentially) the Pacemaker could bring this sort of thing to the masses, and get more people into mixing sounds and songs of differing genres to create brand new music.

To give new users assistance, the Pacemaker website has a blog to explore and share new mixes and sounds. No word on pricing right now. The site is in Beta right now. Not cheap at $800+ dollars, but that beats most pro equipment used to do this, as as it often runs thousands of dollars.
