Nowadays, everything is portable, and that includes internet routers. Enter the ZyXEL MWR222.

The MWR222 from ZyXEL is a tough, pocket-sized, fully 11n-compatible portable Wi-FI router that users can take with them wherever they go, making it great for road warriors/hotel veterans who need net access on the go, without all the bulky gadgets typically needed for such access.

The device includes 2 Ethernet and 2 USB 2.0 ports with a built-in rechargeable battery that gives you up to 2 hours of operation time.

This pocket rocket also has built-in security features, and more goodies. It’ll be released in Q1 2010 for $299.99 retail price, and here’s a press release all about it.

There are a few caveats though, as you’ll see below.

It works as an ordinary pen, but the secret is: push a little button on the top, and it tells you the signal strength of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot (1 LED for weak, all the way to 4 LEDs for strongest), without doing anything else.

The above mentioned caveats: it only detects B/G networks, not N or A. It can’t tell you if its running properly, or if it needs a password. It includes the 2 required cell batteries that help it to function.

If this sounds pretty cool to you, run over to the USBFever site and grab yours for $13.99.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s, even the ones with just sound weren’t cheap.

The Ycam WiFi Baby monitor is certainly a whole lot cheaper, as it uses the inexpensive video technology that is very common on webcams everywhere. The Ycam is designed to hook up with the user’s own WiFi network, and it is able to take high quality video with sound. It can shoot in 30fps with 640 x 480 pixel resolution, which is far beyond the glorified walkie-talkies that passed as monitors previously.

The Ycam has infrared night vision, so you can see your little babies even in the dark. Another special feature is the motion detection system that can even alert you with email. There is also an option for MPEG-4 compression for reduced bandwith and storage. It is possible to view from many devices including laptops, even the iPhone.

You should be able to get the this new take on parental responsibility on the BabyMonitorsDirect website for about £149.99 (which is about $200 USD).

This interesting gadget combination is a wireless router with something completely non-technical, a slick looking vase in this case.

Some of you might be thinking that this device is not really very interesting or noteworthy. After all, you could just buy a wireless router and not risk the water damage that could happen when you spill it, for example. But for feng shui or big-budget design type homes, a router just doesn’t work with the decor very well.

However, I think we are getting to the point where every home has a wireless router. So why not make one pretty as well as practical. I can’t help but wonder how comfortable a user would feel pouring water into a wireless router, much less dirt. I guess a user might feel better putting the seeds of life in it and letting plants grow as he or she goes online.

The company responsible for this product is a Saudi Arabian corporation called STC. My source doesn’t really have a price, nor where it is available. It could easily be a hit whenever it comes on the market, as inital responses on various sites have been positive. It’s assumed it will be available at one point.
